Did the job

Put the adapter onto the spindle then carefully line up the knob and press down.

Note, once the adapter is in the knob you're never going to get it out again so put the adapter on the spindle first, not in the knob!!!

Plastic feels more flexible to me, ie, not like old bakelite...but...that's neither good or bad. It's perfectly firm enough to do the job so I'm quite happy.
